Breast Perception

  • The average bra size in the U.S. over the past 20 years has increased from a 34B to a 34DD.
  • Most women (72%) are dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts, most men and women (58%) are satisfied with their partner’s breasts.
  •  Younger and thinner women worried that their breasts were too small; older and heavier women were more concerned with breast droopiness.
  •  Women who are dissatisfied with their breasts have lower body satisfaction and are concerned with wearing a bathing suit in public.
  •  Dissatisfied women also less willing to undress in front of their partner and are more likely to conceal their breasts from their partner during sex.

Micromastia (also called hypomastia, breast aplasia, breast hypoplasia, or mammary hypoplasia) is a medical term describing the postpubertal underdevelopment of a woman's breast tissue.[1] Just as it is impossible to define 'normal' breast size, there is no objective definition of micromastia. Breast development is commonly asymmetric and one or both breasts may be small. This condition may be a congenital defect associated with underlying abnormalities of the pectoral muscle (as in Poland's syndrome[2]), related to trauma (typically surgery or radiotherapy) or it may be a more subjective aesthetic description.

Self perceived micromastia involves a discrepancy between a person's body image, and her internalized images of appropriate or desirable breast size and shape. Societal ideals over breast size vary over time, but there exist many conceived ideas involving breasts and sexual attractiveness and identity across different cultures.

Breast Hypertrophy Macromastia & Gigantomastia

Breast hypertrophy is a rare medical condition of the breast connective tissues in which the breasts become excessively large. The condition is often divided based on the severity into two types, macromastia and gigantomastia. Hypertrophy of the breast tissues may be caused by increased histologic sensitivity to certain hormones such as female sex hormones, prolactin, and growth factors.

Breast hypertrophy is a benign progressive enlargement, which can occur in both breasts (bilateral) or only in one breast (unilateral). It was first scientifically described in 1648.

Big Boob Problems

My Eyes Are Up Here!

Guys Don't Always Remember That My Eyes Are Up Here.

People ask what size bra you are. Both men and women. This is weird and rude. I don't go around asking you how much you, like, weigh

People (even those who don't know you well!) say things to you (even in casual conversation!) like, "Have you ever thought about getting a breast reduction?" No, have you ever thought about getting a nose job? Maybe you could at least turn around and go check your nosiness at the door, then?

You can't wear button down shirts because the buttons gape open and you basically look semi-naked. One time I realized this was happening 30 minutes into a work meeting. It's like having spinach in your teeth, but boobs.

It's impossible to find cute bras that fit. All the lacy balconette bras Victoria's Secret models wear? Look away — because YOU get a giant grandma support bra with two-inch-wide beige straps.

No bathing suits fit. Ever. Not one pieces, not two pieces, not red pieces, not blue pieces.

Wardrobe Malfunctions

You have to ‘hold the girls’ when you bend over so they don’t pop out.

You can't wear button down shirts because the buttons gape open and you basically look semi-naked. One time I realized this was happening 30 minutes into a work meeting. It's like having spinach in your teeth, but boobs.

No matter what type of bathing suit you wear and how much coverage your swimsuit gives you, your babies always come out at some point.

Psychological Problems

In numerous studies, women who possessed large breasts had a higher likelihood of experiencing depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Because macromastia is termed a cosmetic condition, it’s not covered by most health plans and can be very expensive to treat. However, doctors and surgeons continue to emphasize the emotional and psychological effects of macromastia.

Women who suffer from big breast problems struggle to find clothing that fits properly and is often forced to don baggy attire to accommodate their large breasts. This struggle can cause women to avoid social gatherings and ultimately increase their susceptibility to depression and anxiety.

Exercise Bounce

One sports bra is not enough to hold them during workouts.

Running. This is enough to send shivers down your spine. How can you run decently and quickly without big boobs flapping up and down?

Your boobs sweat. If you have ever dared to step out of your air conditioned house during the summer season, your boobs will sweat (a lot!). What is even worse is that it creeps from under your boobs and seeps in through your shirt, showing off watermarks around your boob.

Push ups are a big no-no!  Thanks to your boob’s size, there is not much space between the floor and your boobs when doing a push-up.

What to Wear

You automatically look sexual in everything you wear. Your average American Eagle V-neck or henley looks cute and casual on medium- and small-busted girls but inevitably looks like some "da club" outfit on you.

Cross body bags awkwardly snuggle up to your armpit. Like you're nursing a baby.

You can never wear a low-cut top. If you dare to, you might as well totally forego the top. After all, it will not make any difference—your boobs will still not be well protected.

You can't wear any bridesmaids dresses because they're ALWAYS strapless. Damn you brides and your strapless dress leanings. DAMN YOU.

You look especially sexual in bathing suits. There is soooo much cleavage. Even in a one-piece bathing suit you look like you're trying to get cast in the Hooters calendar.

Strategies to Combat Big Breast Problems

Women try many ways to help lower the societal pressure and decrease risks of mental health issues with having big breasts. There are many strategies woman can pursue to overcome problems associated with macromastia if they can’t afford surgery.

Make sure your bras fit properly. Many women who experience macromastia struggle with finding the right bra size. In some cases, if they can’t find the appropriate size, they settle for a product that doesn’t fit right. However, there are companies that create custom bras for all shapes and sizes. For instance, DeyJay, Curvy Kate, and others offer custom sizes ranging from 28A-44J.

Find the right attire. As I’ve already mentioned, women who experience macromastia can struggle with finding flattering clothing. However, there are ways to accommodate large breasts. For instance, donning length sleeves can help draw other’s eyes away from your breasts.
